Richard Schooler, DO
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Dr. Richard Schooler joined the Freeman family in 1985 as an obstetrician/gynecologist. In 2004, he became Medical Director and Director of Medical Education, where his roles and responsibilities included direction and leadership of the medical staff, patient care/clinical leadership, system quality improvement and leadership of the health system’s Graduate Medical Education programs.
In 2006, Dr. Schooler was named Chief Medical Officer. In this position, his leadership role expanded to include physician recruitment, practice management, physician relations and senior-executive-level direction of medical care at Freeman Health System.
In 2013, he became Freeman Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, thereby assuming senior executive level leadership responsibility for business, clinical and medical operations throughout the health system.
In 2006, Governor Matt Blunt appointed Dr. Schooler to the Missouri State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts. In 2011, Dr. Schooler was recognized by Resolution of the Missouri House of Representatives for his leadership immediately following the May 22, 2011, Joplin tornado.
Dr. Schooler serves on the Freeman Physician Hospital Organization Board of Directors and the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Missouri Physician Consultative Committee. He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives, American Osteopathic Association, Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons and long-time Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor with Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
A native of southeast Kansas, Dr. Schooler graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelor of Arts and received his osteopathic medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. After completing his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Michigan State University in 1985, he opened his practice in Joplin. He is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
