“Zero to Zoom” is the racing-related theme for this year’s 2026 Freeman 5K and Walk for Autism, which is slated for Saturday, April 18.

Once again, an enthusiastic Houston Edgerton helped unveil the theme for the popular community event that, in 2025, drew a record-shattering 886 runners and walkers to the Joplin-based Bill & Virginia Leffen Center for Autism.

Houston’s family, or “Team Houston,” has been the top fundraising team for the last five Autism Walks, raising nearly $10,000 last year alone. Funds raised from the combined 5K run and walk supports program development and scholarship assistance. Overall, Leffen Center provides diagnostic, treatment and educational services for individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

“I like to believe that we have helped other teams become more passionate about fund-raising,” said Stephanie Edgerton, Houston’s mother. The competitive nature among teams to raise the most money has increased each year, “we welcome the competition, because that just means more funds for the kids.”

The top three teams who raise the most money will be eligible for three race-themed prizes, including the first place “Grand Prix Getaway.”

Freeman Health System’s President and CEO Matt Fry said the Freeman 5K and Walk for Autism event holds a special place in his heart for two reasons. First, the 2025 event was the first he attended with his family as Freeman’s new CEO. He also revealed his sister’s oldest son was diagnosed with autism.

“They have struggled mightily for years to find the resources they need, and it makes me reflect fondly on what we have here. They, too, live in a small community in California and centers like this just don’t exist in communities like that very often,” Fry said. “I’m very grateful for what we’ve done here, and I’m just really proud and honored that our community has an opportunity to use this center and the great resources we provide.”

During the day of the event, participants and their families can enjoy a car show, a vendor fair filled with activities and giveaways, and an opportunity to purchase tickets for raffle baskets. Instead of waiting to purchase those raffle tickets the day of the event, tickets can now be purchased beginning April 1.
